2016 Yamhill Vineyards Chardonnay

from 50.00

91 points Wine Advocate

Crystalline aromatics of pink and yellow citrus, white florals, lemongrass, chalk, wet minerals mingle with well-integrated wood spice. Bright flavors on the palate are chiseled and flinty, finishing long with texture and density buoyed by vibrant acidity.

Vintage: 2016 was phenomenal. A warm spring was followed by a mild summer with just enough rain. Weather in September was optimal, allowing physiological and sugar ripeness with high but balanced acidity on an average sized crop.

Place: Yamhill Vineyards, Yamhill-Carlton. 1984/85-planted Wente selection Chardonnay vines grow on own roots in sandy, marine sediment WillaKenzie soils at 400-500' and face due south. Planted in two, non-irrigated blocks, the lower, larger section is impacted more by phylloxera than the smaller, upper section. Starting at the end of 2014, farmer Ralph Stein began vine by vine replanting with vineyard selected Wente on rootstock. The vineyard is farmed sustainably by Ralph and his family, who live and operate a small B&B on the property.

Winemaking: Hand harvested 9/10/16. Pressed and briefly settled, the juice was transferred to 1 new 228L French oak barrel and 3 neutral 228L French oak barrels for fermentation with native yeasts and zero additions/adjustments except SO2. Aging took place in a cool cellar in the Eola-Amity Hills with minimal lees stirring. The wine went through full malolactic and was gently racked from barrel to stainless steel after one year for a second winter on lees. The final blend has 15% new wood. Bottled 2/7/2018 unfined and unfiltered.
